Every hospital on this register has been through the same six checks, and each entry shows what we found — including whether somebody from Sevanta has been inside the building. Where a figure is still being verified, the entry says so rather than leaving a gap you might read as a zero.

The vetting protocol
Each check names the source we use, so a patient — or an assessor — can ask us to produce the evidence. Two of the six are deliberately unflattering, because a vetting policy with no failure conditions is marketing.
We look the hospital up on the accreditor’s own public register rather than accepting a logo on a website, and we record the body, the certificate number and the expiry date. Scope matters as much as the badge: NABH entry-level certification is not the same as full hospital accreditation, and both allow a hospital to say “NABH accredited”. We record which one it holds.
A hospital’s accreditation says nothing about the individual who will operate on you. Every consultant we put in front of a patient is checked against the Indian Medical Register held by the National Medical Commission, and we record their registration number, primary qualification and year of registration alongside the hospital.
Not “a leading centre for orthopaedics” — the number of that specific procedure the unit performed in a named twelve-month period, supplied in writing by the hospital’s medical records department. If a hospital will not put a figure in writing, we do not publish one, and we say so on its entry.
We ask for the hospital’s own surgical site infection rate, how it is measured and who audits it, plus its readmission and return-to-theatre figures. What we are testing is partly the number and partly whether the hospital measures itself at all. A unit that cannot produce its own figures does not go on the register.
Before a hospital is listed, one of us visits it in person — the ward you would recover on, the theatre corridor, the intensive care unit and the international patient desk — and the hospital’s entry records that we have. We return at least once a year. An entry with no visit recorded tells you something real.
Every listed hospital signs an agreement with us covering scope of treatment, who is responsible for what, how a complication is escalated, the complaints route, and what happens to your money if the operation is cancelled. We negotiate the failure cases before you travel, not after.
What our checks do not cover
Accreditation tells you a hospital meets a defined standard on the day it was assessed. It is a meaningful signal and we will not list a hospital without it. It is not a promise about your operation, and it is not a substitute for the UK protections that simply do not travel with you.
